Converging Trends In Support of Deep Tech

Over the last few weeks, outside of the key issues of Covid 19, protests and systemic racism, a couple of bills that positively impact Deep Tech Investing have surfaced. trends that speak to our under investment in basic research in important technical domains as well as localities and markets that allow for more efficient research — auger well for Deep Tech Investing, have subtly bubbled to the surface. The first addresses our under investment in basic research in key technical areas that ensure our national competitiveness, and the second addresses under investment in innovation economies outside of the 3 main areas of the Bay Area, New York and Boston. Both, IMHO are important as we move forward and work towards providing opportunities for all peoples in America.

Scientific Research and National Competitiveness

There is an increasing acknowledgement that the United States has under-invested in key technological domains that will be important for the future. The recent spat between the US and China has made this starkly obvious, esp via a vis certain technologies where we are dependent on China to provide. And, given their vast investment in emerging technologies, there is a perception that we have or will be falling behind.

To secure the United States’ place as a global tech leader, a bi-partisan group of senators have introduced the Endless Frontier Act. The legislation would overhaul the National Science Foundation (NSF) to “solidify…
